History of Ekornes
Starting from humble beginnings, Ekornes skyrocketed to world renown when founder Jen Ekornes had a bright idea: to craft a more comfortable mattress that remained affordable for mainstream consumers. Taking inspiration from a larger mattress he saw at a furniture exhibition, Jen Ekornes scaled it down to the average mattress size. Three employees started making these mattresses in a barn-like structure in Sunnmøre, Norway. It was there that Ekornes, along with his factory foreman, developed the first commercial Svane mattress that supported ergonomically correct sleeping. The idea that mattress design could improve relaxation, and overall health, was groundbreaking. The success of the Svane mattress helped the Ekornes brand rise quickly, with more factories and products rapidly becoming available around Europe. In the decades since, Ekornes has adapted its original mission of ergonomically focused sleep to focus on other areas of life, as well – including relaxation at home, and proper seating at work.
